Smudging is traditionally used by American First Nations to purify places, people and events. California desert sage is the most masculine of Native American incenses. It is a very powerful purifier.
Instructions for use:
Light the end of the stick. Once the sage is well lit, extinguish the flame by waving the stick in the air. The ember created allows you to disperse the smoke with a feather or your hand for purification.
To purify the house, smudge around each room in a clockwise direction until you return to the starting point.
To purify a person or object, disperse the smoke upwards, forwards and backwards, circling the person.
Always open windows to let the smoke out. Ideally, use an abalone shell to carry and extinguish the sage stick. To extinguish the stick, crush the embers at the bottom of the shell.
Before storing the sage stick for the next use, make sure it is completely extinguished.
